Movie Description
Winner of four Academy Awards including best picture, director, screenplay, and music, this 1963 adaptation of Henry Fielding's classic novel is a rousing, bawdy comedy about a young man's ribald adventures in 18th-century England. Albert Finney is splendidly hilarious in the title role of a charming womanizer who was discovered as an abandoned infant in the bed of Squire Allworthy, a wealthy landowner who named the child Tom Jones and raised him as his own. As a young man, Tom yearns for the comely daughter (Susannah York) of a neighboring squire, but his amorous adventures (including an extended food orgy that becomes the film's funniest scene) lead him to London and to a duel with a jealous husband. He's sentenced to hang, but fate intervenes. A hit around the world, the film was expertly written by noted playwright John Osborne, and director Tony Richardson uses a variety of old-style movie techniques to heighten the lusty, good-natured fun. Don't miss this one! --Jeff Shannon

Average Customer Rating of 5"The original - Albert Finney"

An extremely successful adaptation of a rather boring book "Tom Jones - story of a foundling"

New techniques use like characters reacting directly to the camera - later taken to an extreme in Michael Caine's "ALPHIE"

Several other things in this version e.g. the sexiest eating scene, the use of a harpsicord and commentater.

The sexy eating scene makes good watching and only matched by Steve McQueen in the chess scen in The "Thomas Crown Affair"

What a hoot. Saw this movie many years ago and was thrilled to receive it on dvd. As to the movie Albert Finney was at his best particularily with the female members of the cast. Susannah York played the love of his life beautifully against Joan Greenwoods seductress role. Dianne Celento in a co starring role was excellent. I suppose the most significant scene was the dinner scene with sexual undertones...this scene was worth purchassing the dvd alone. In the mature roles Hugh Griffith was at his best while Edith Evans played the Aunt with her usual flair.A perfectly cast movie which I highly recommend. Purchase and enjoy.

I must say this move has been my favorite movie for a while now. I have seen quite a few movies and there is something about this one that has everything in my opinion. It is funny, has enough drama without causing any serious depression, includes a grand plot, and it just has a great sense of adventure to boot. I never get bored with it ...but I imagine those hooked on Transformers and Iron Man might fall asleep.

The picture quality of this so terrible- it is a shame that such a classic has not had any attention given to it. The scenes that relied on natural lighting are very dark and some of the scenes have serious color washout.
