Average Customer Rating of 3"Not sure how I feel about this one..."
Written By: Robyn Funkhouser
Recently I saw a documentary about sexuality in film (I believe it was an HBO production) and this movie, Romance, was briefly discussed. I put it on a list of films I wanted to check out. After watching the movie I'm just not exactly sure how I feel about it. I'm left feeling a bit confused and unfulfilled. The movie centers around a woman who is (I think) married to (or dating/living with) a male model. The woman is extremely frustrated with his disinterest in her sexually so she begins seeking elsewhere for men who will treat her like a sex object. The story follows her brief and loveless affairs with several other men. I was definitely turned off by quite a few things in this movie including her male "model" partner. I found him disgustingly skeevy and anatomically MAJORLY lacking (it is even pointed out in the movie). I found her to be sad and boring and incredibly selfish and self-centered. I was left wanting more from the scenes between her and the older gentleman she allowed to dominate her. I was left wanting more in general. I was very confused by the final scene in the film in which she appears to be at a funeral holding the baby she gave birth to in the scene before. I was never quite sure exactly whose funeral it was or how she was so sure who the baby's father was. In conclusion, perhaps this film could be interpreted in such a way that it might have a significant meaning on some level, but for me, I can't quite figure out if I just didn't get it or if there wasn't much there to get.
Average Customer Rating of 4"A WOMAN WITH NEEDS!!"

I purchased this DVD with an opened mind and after watching it I believe that woman could be one of a million women walking the streets today... And the detail during the birth was WOW!! She was a mild-mannered tramp with a sexy disposition...

A psychological study into Bondage that is well done, interesting and not too scary!! Well written and preformed.
Average Customer Rating of 5"Introspección femenina"

The Bottom Line:

Romance is unfortunately notable only for its graphic sex, for Breillat has not come up with a compelling story to go along with the taboo-shattering scenes; if you want to see the provocative French director use her skills to a point and purpose, watch Fat Girl instead.
